By display
On a small boat 4–7 inches is enough; on a motorboat 9 inches or more is more comfortable — especially if several windows are shown on the screen at once.
By transducer
Standard CHIRP shows depth and fish, scanning sonar (SideVü / DownScan) draws an image of the bottom, and live sonar shows movement in real time.
Following charts
Check whether charts of your waters are available for the device and whether you can draw your own depth contours.
